From the San Diego Art Institute May - June Journal, written by the guest artist Elana Lomakin when asked to choose her favorite piece from the 50th Annual International Show:
"it was "House of the White Irises by Katsy Johnson I chose to write about. This encaustic print looked so familiar to me that I first thought it was done by a Russian born artist. From my very childhood I remember old photographs taken at the beginning of the 20th century of Russian country houses called "dacha". "House of the White Irises" instantly reminded me of the ever moving pictures of Russian Intelligentsia and their world destroyed forever after the Revolution of 1917. The artist's beautiful statement says that it is an abandoned house, but it does not look like one to me, because of the strongest associations with those turn of the century pictures I remembered earlier. For me, as for many other Russians, the images like this one belong to the generation immortalized by Chekov in his Plays and Stories. Looking at this photograph, so delicately and lovingly taken, where the use of encaustic makes it even more fragile and lost in time, I can still feel the warmth of the sun drenched old house, and I would imagine an orchard behind it (could it be a Cherry Orchard?), where the guests accompanied by the owners went to, and a seagull crying at a nearby lake, and a young girl confused in her feelings for someone...Everything that Chekhov was poetizing, the Soviets took away from their people. That is why melancholy falls upon me as if I too lost something dear to me - something that I have never even known."
